Arizona could get two of its key players back for Saturday's home opener. Fisch said left tackle Jordan Morgan, who missed the season opener because of a lower-leg injury, will be a game-time decision against SDSU. Morgan traveled with the team but didn't suit up. Fisch said Morgan "wasn't healthy enough to play the amount of snaps we were going to play (83 vs. BYU)." Whether he can do it vs. the Aztecs will be determined in practice this week. Receiver Jamarye Joiner has been working on the side for most of the offseason after having foot surgery in the spring. He dressed for warmups before the BYU game and participated in drills. Joiner had projected a return in Week 3 or 4 but could make his 2021 debut this Saturday, Fisch said. "He's doing great," Fisch said. "Dr. Joiner wasn't exactly sure how he was going to recover." - Arizona Republic

The Denver Broncos did not sign former Auburn/Jacksonville State tight end Landon Rice, though they did express interest in him as a free agent, according to the Denver Post. Rice's signing with the Broncos was originally announced by Jacksonville State's official social media accounts. Rice was not selected in the 2021 NFL Draft but Jacksonville State announced on Twitter and Instagram that he had signed with the Broncos. A former four-star tight end, Rice originally signed with Auburn as part of its 2016 recruiting class. He was dismissed from the team on Sept. 10, 2016 after being accused of rape for an incident that occurred in April 2016. A subsequent Title IX investigation found Rice was "responsible" for sexual assault, and his appeal of the ruling was denied. As part of his initial punishment, Rice was banned from Auburn's campus for eight years -- until the fall of 2024 -- and was not permitted to attend any of the university's events during that time. - Birmingham News

Jamarye Joiner can't shake the foot injury that's been nagging him since the 2019 season. The Arizona Wildcats redshirt sophomore wide receiver underwent surgery Friday morning for a Jones fracture, a small break on the outer side of Joiner's left foot also known as the fifth metatarsal, and could miss the first month of the 2021 season. Full recovery for this injury the first time is anywhere between six to 12 weeks, which is ideal timing for Joiner since the Wildcats just concluded spring ball and are heading into the summer before preseason training camp.

Unfortunately for Joiner, it's the second time he's gone through the process of healing a fractured foot, and the surgeons were unable to remove the screw from the first surgery and bone grafted a plate with another screw, his mother, Christina Pena, told the Star. Joiner isn't expected to be 100% healthy until September - potentially October - depending on how quickly he recovers. Joiner experienced discomfort in his foot in 2019, but thought it was because of his new cleats, and "pretty much had that feeling all season," he said in October. Playing through pain, Joiner appeared in all 12 games and caught 34 passes for a team-high 552 yards and five touchdowns, including a 140-yard, two-touchdown outing at Arizona State. - Arizona Star News

Jamarye Joiner is staying after all. After meeting with Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch and wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings between Tuesday and Wednesday, the UA redshirt sophomore, who left the program after Kevin Sumlin's dismissal, announced that he will return to the Wildcats for the 2021 season. Joiner, a 6-1, 214-pound Tucson native and Cienega High School product, tweeted the news Thursday morning. And he wasn't the only one. Receiver Ma'jon Wright, perhaps the Wildcats' top freshman in 2020, also announced he will be returning to the program. Like Joiner, Wright had put his name in the NCAA transfer portal last month. - Arizona Star News

Arizona redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jamarye Joiner is the latest starter to leave the UA football program, announcing on social media Friday that he is entering the NCAA's transfer portal. Joiner is the fourth Wildcat in two days to depart from Arizona. Quarterback Grant Gunnell, wide receiver Boobie Curry and offensive lineman Robert Congel entered the transfer portal on Thursday. The former Salpointe Catholic and Cienega star arrived at the UA as a quarterback before switching to receiver. In three seasons, he caught 46 passes for 663 yards and six touchdowns - including a 34-yard score in the Wildcats' 34-30 season-opening loss to USC. - Arizona Star News

Joiner played the majority of the 2019 season with a foot injury that was later diagnosed as a Jones fracture, a break at the base of the fifth metatarsal. The former quarterback tabbed a team-high 552 receiving yards on 34 receptions and hauled in five touchdowns. His best performance was a 140-yard, two-touchdown performance against ASU. UA outside receivers coach Taylor Mazzone said Joiner's efforts in the Territorial Cup game was "a great game for him to build off. Now we know what he can do. … Game-planning-wise, he's put it on tape for us." First impressions of Arizona's training camp indicate Joiner will be one of the Wildcats' leading receivers in 2020. With a pass-first quarterback in Gunnell driving the offense, Joiner could be in for a special season - even if it's only seven games. - Arizona Star News

Alen Karajic made his fourth field goal with 2:40 remaining and Jacksonville State beat Florida International 19-10 on Friday night for the first FCS victory over an FBS team this season. Jacksonville State (3-1), of the Ohio Valley Conference, got its first win against an FBS school since topping Georgia State in 2013 and Mississippi in '10. JSU outrushed FIU 285-72 despite Zerrick Cooper leaving the game with an injury after one carry. Josh Samuel carried it 25 times for 163 yards and a touchdown, and Uriah West added 24 carries for 116 yards. Karajic made his first three field goals before getting his fourth attempt blocked, snapping a string of seven makes. JSU coach John Grass returned, in the Gamecocks' season finale, after missing last week's win over North Alabama due to testing positive for COVID-19. FIU (0-3), of Conference USA, was held to 156 total yards and six first downs. - AP College Foootball

Joiner displayed breakout potential last season despite being less than 100% healthy. He capped the campaign with a career game against Arizona State - seven catches, 140 yards, two touchdowns - despite the foot issue and a sore hamstring. "What a great game for him to build off," outside receiver coach Taylor Mazzone said. "Now we know what he can do. … Game-planning-wise, he's put it on tape for us." Joiner called it the game that "set me up for this year" and the performance that allowed him to "showcase my talent, showcase what I can do, the role I play for the University of Arizona. It's just being a ballplayer and playing for my team." The offseason brought challenges for everyone.

Since he couldn't run for much of it, Joiner had to find ways to work on his game. He delved into film study, paying particularly close attention to receivers with physical attributes similar to his. "I tell young athletes all the time: You don't have to be the most athletic, but you have to be the smartest," Joiner said. "I try to get everything down. I watch Deebo Samuel all the time, Julio Jones all the time, to try to really look at what they do in their routes, see how they get open and how they break down, where their hips are, their arms are, their eyes are." Most important for Joiner: where his foot is. Less than three weeks from the opener, he reported no lingering concerns. "I'm ready to go," Joiner said. "I put myself in the best position during the offseason to get my body 100%." - Arizona Republic

Zerrick Cooper ran for two touchdowns, threw for another and Jacksonville State defeated North Alabama 24-17 on Saturday in the absence of Gamecocks head coach John Grass. Grass announced Thursday he had tested positive for COVID-19 and would self-isolate with assistant head coach Jimmy Ogle overseeing Gamecocks. Cooper's second 1-yard score of the day gave the Gamecocks (2-1) a 21-17 lead at the end of the third quarter. Passes of 23 and 40 yards to Trae Berry sparked the quick drive. Alen Karajic extended the advantage with a 36-yard field goal with under 10 1/2 minutes left. Cooper threw for 244 yards with Barry making five catches for 104 yards. Cooper's 14-yard pass to Quan Charleston was his 61st career TD throw, tying Ed Lett's school record. Cooper also ran for 46 yards. Jakobi Byrd's 100th career catch was an 11-yard TD reception of Rett Files' only attempt that gave the Lions a 17-14 lead. Blake Dever threw for 202 yards. Attendance was 4,632, below the 7,000 maximum North Alabama had set for its 14,215-seat stadium. Both the Lions and the Gamecocks are playing four-game fall seasons. - AP College Football

Nicario Harper's 64-yard fumble return for a touchdown with about five minutes left helped Jacksonville State pull away from Mercer for a 34-28 victory on a rainy Saturday. Trailing 27-21, Mercer's Harrison Frost completed a pass to Andrew May, but Kolbi Fuqua forced May to fumble and Harper scoped it up and scored to put the Gamecocks ahead 34-21. Frost threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Dirrim with 51 seconds remaining but the Gamecocks recovered the ensuing onside kick.

The Gamecocks' Zerrick Cooper was 12-of-18 passing for 139 yards with touchdown runs from the 1 and 9. Cooper moved into second past Ed Lett on the school's passing yards list with 7,153. Eli Jenkins holds the record with 7,652 yards. Frost was 12 of 25 for 134 yards passing with two touchdown passes. Tyray Devezin had a 3-yard touchdown run and finished with 94 yard rushing to surpass 2,000 career yards. It was the only home game for Jacksonville State (1-1) during its four-game fall schedule, and the first game of Mercer’s three-game fall season. - AP College Football
